Be Like...

Do you remember the old "Be Like Mike" commercials? They featured basketball star, Michael Jordan.

How were we to be like Mike? By drinking what Mike drinks – Gatorade! And in other commercials, we were told to be like Mike by wearing what Mike wears – Nike. And by eating what Mike eats –McDonalds.

Come on – we all know that this external stuff isn't important! So, who should we be like? Today's gospel presents two possibilities – Mary and Martha.

Mary takes an unusual posture for a woman of her time – one that only a disciple of Jesus would take. Mary sits at Jesus' feet and listens.

Martha takes on a more traditional role for women. She busies herself with serving Jesus and his companions.

So, who are we to imitate – Mary or Martha? Both! Be like Mary. Sit at the feet of Jesus. Be like Martha. Take action to serve God and others.

God, help us to become people of both faith and action.
