When Caitlin was 3½, we took a trip to Sea World. Surprisingly, it wasn't Shamu that caught her attention but rather the pearl divers. She listened closely as they told stories of going deep into the ocean to look for valuable pearls and watched with interest as they demonstrated their underwater dives. For years afterward, when anyone asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" she responded, "a pearl diver."
Caitlin eventually outgrew that dream, but my hope is that she will never lose that childlike fascination of searching for treasure.
Of course, the pearl of great price isn't at the bottom of the ocean but resides in each of us. Our challenge is to search deep within in order to find it. We'll know that we've found this precious pearl, when we're willing to give up everything we own to hold onto it.
